my major is economics and i am take Global awarness. recently, i am working on a project with similar comment, but certainly on different topic. i found the data about this article before, but i did not use it for coures. so it is little bit easier when i write this article.
The economical introduction of Botswana
In total the economy growth is in a quite high level—more than 5% every year. Mining plays an important role (especially diamond). Diamond is affluent in Botswana, it makes contribution to GDP (GDP= Consumption+ investment+ government spending + net export.).Although economy grows very rapidly in Botswana, there are still one third of the people in the country are below poverty line. It is because mining does not benefit everyone. It makes a huge income difference between poor and rich people.
In total, service and industry sectors occupies most of the GDP. Meat, skins and other useful animal products are utilized well which belongs to primary sector. Unlike other less developed countries, tertiary sector (tourism) also works well due to its beautiful scenery. This can benefit both government revenue and unemployed people because the advent of foreigners brings plenty of money and work opportunities. On the other hand, the agricultural in Botswana is unsubstantial which contributes only a small part of GDP. It maybe because the tiny arable land and obsolete cultivated technology. The limit agricultural products could hardly reach the demand. Thus Botswana needs to import foodstuff to satisfy their demand and bring in advanced technology. As I mentioned, Botswana is abound with diamond, but only exploit without machining. It will add more value if they do it by themselves.
Botswana has a relatively low literacy rate, which indicates that education is not good. We think this is a reason why technology is not advanced. It is an obstacle of the development in Botswana. Most of the people have low skills result in a high unemployment. People really need to get more education or learn more skills if they want to be employed. Due to the extremely high HIV prevalence rate, Botswana is a typical HIV infected country— More than one third adults is infected by HIV! It shows that health care in Botswana is defective. The reason is many people cannot afford medical expense. We can clearly see the disadvantage of unequal distribution of income. The high HIV prevalence rate maybe the reason causes the life expectancy in Botswana is extremely low. But we still can see that it increases rapidly these years, especially in 2007, which means that living standards is getting better and better.
In conclusion, the GDP per capita is good enough, but some large problems exist. Domestic agriculture cannot satisfy the demand; large dependency on mining gives a unequal income distribution; too many people are suffering; and the work opportunity is much less than population.

ReplyDeleteI am really interested in your journal because my country, Japan has some same problems as well as Botswana. In partucular, education rate is decreasing right now, but I have no idea to solve the problem.
I hope that you're gonna be good economist in your future, and then solve our problems.
Thank you for good article!!
